Ultrasound Scanning for Filler Assessment and Treatment

Ultrasound allows us to look beneath the skin and assess what is present before deciding whether further treatment, dissolving or referral is appropriate.

At Kirei Clinic, ultrasound scanning is available for patients with concerns following previous facial or buttock filler, including treatment performed at another clinic. It can also be used during facial filler treatment when requested or when your clinician believes additional visual guidance would be helpful.

Ultrasound Assessment After Filler

If an area does not look or feel as expected after filler, it is important to understand what may be present before adding more product or attempting to dissolve it.

Ultrasound may help us assess:

  • The position and depth of previously placed filler
  • Lumps, nodules or areas of firmness
  • Filler migration or product sitting outside the intended area
  • Swelling or asymmetry following filler
  • The relationship between filler and nearby blood vessels
  • Whether an area contains material that appears consistent with hyaluronic acid filler
  • Whether further investigation or referral may be more appropriate than treatment

An ultrasound assessment does not guarantee that every product can be identified. Some fillers, permanent materials and substances injected outside regulated medical practice can be difficult to characterise. If the findings are unclear or outside what can safely be managed at Kirei Clinic, we may recommend referral for medical imaging or specialist assessment.

Facial Filler Concerns

Ultrasound can support the assessment of concerns following filler treatment to the lips, cheeks, tear troughs, temples, nose, chin, jawline and other areas of the face.

Where hyaluronic acid filler is identified and dissolving is appropriate, ultrasound can help guide the placement of hyaluronidase towards the product rather than treating the area by feel alone.

Not every concern requires dissolving, and not every filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Your consultation and scan findings will determine the safest next step.

Urgent symptoms: Sudden severe pain, skin blanching, mottling, changes in vision or rapidly worsening symptoms after filler require urgent medical assessment. A routine ultrasound appointment should not delay emergency care.

Ultrasound Assessment After Buttock Filler

We also offer ultrasound assessment for patients who have concerns following filler or other injectable material placed in the buttocks.

This may include:

  • Lumps or areas of firmness
  • Unevenness or asymmetry
  • Persistent swelling
  • Discomfort around a previously injected area
  • Uncertainty about the position or depth of the injected material
  • Concerns following treatment performed in the UK or abroad

Buttock injections may involve hyaluronic acid filler, biostimulatory products, fat or permanent substances. Ultrasound may provide useful information about the location and appearance of the material, but it may not identify exactly what was injected.

Scanning does not mean that treatment or removal can be offered. Depending on the material, symptoms and ultrasound findings, referral to an appropriate medical or surgical specialist may be required.

Urgent symptoms: Severe pain, redness, heat, fever, discharge, skin breakdown, breathlessness or rapidly increasing swelling require urgent medical assessment rather than a routine clinic appointment.

Ultrasound-Guided Facial Filler Treatment

Most facial filler treatments at Kirei Clinic are carried out using detailed anatomical assessment and established injection techniques without continuous ultrasound guidance.

Ultrasound guidance is available for patients who specifically request it and may also be recommended by Dr Mei or Dr Rosie where previous filler, altered anatomy or the planned treatment area makes imaging useful.

The area can be scanned before treatment to assess existing filler and map relevant structures. Ultrasound may then be used during treatment to provide additional visual information while the needle or cannula is being positioned.

Ultrasound is an additional clinical tool. It does not remove all risk and does not replace anatomical knowledge, careful technique or appropriate patient selection.

What Happens at the Appointment?

Your appointment begins with a consultation covering what was injected, if known, when and where treatment was performed, any symptoms or changes you have noticed, previous attempts to treat or dissolve the area, and your relevant medical history.

The area is then examined and scanned using ultrasound gel and a handheld probe. Your clinician will explain what can and cannot be seen and discuss the appropriate next step.

Assessment, dissolving and further filler treatment may need to take place at separate appointments. Treatment will only be offered when it is clinically appropriate.

FAQs

Can ultrasound identify exactly which filler was used?

Not always. Ultrasound can show the location, depth and appearance of material beneath the skin, but it may not confirm the exact brand or substance injected.

No. Hyaluronidase dissolves hyaluronic acid filler. It does not dissolve permanent filler, biostimulatory products, silicone, fat or unknown substances.

Yes. We can assess patients who have received treatment elsewhere, including treatment performed abroad. Please bring any available treatment records, product details or photographs.

Yes. Ultrasound assessment is available for concerns following buttock filler or other injected material. Scanning does not guarantee that removal or treatment can be provided.

Yes. Ultrasound-guided facial filler treatment can be requested when booking. Your clinician will confirm whether it is appropriate for the planned treatment.

No. Ultrasound can improve assessment and help guide selected procedures, but it cannot remove every treatment risk or guarantee an outcome. Your clinician will still assess whether treatment is appropriate and explain the relevant limitations and risks.
