How long do results last?
Tear trough filler typically lasts a minimum of 9 to 12 months, and often lasts years in our patients. Your own rate of movement, skin quality and lifestyle affect how long your result holds.
Is this treatment painful?
Most patients describe mild discomfort rather than pain. We generally use a cannula technique rather than numbing cream, which keeps discomfort low without a topical anaesthetic first.
Will I bruise or swell?
Swelling and bruising are possible in this area, but they are usually minimal and short-lived. The skin under your eyes is thin, so any bruising here tends to be more visible than elsewhere on the face, even when the amount is small.
Is this treatment safe?
The tear trough is a delicate, higher-risk injection zone, given the closeness of blood vessels and the thinness of the skin here. Your safety depends on accurate anatomical assessment and technique. Dr Mei’s background in maxillofacial surgery, and her own treatment protocol for this area, support safe delivery of this treatment. This area also qualifies for ultrasound-guided treatment, mapping the vessels beneath your skin before Dr Mei or Dr Rosie injects.
Am I suitable for tear trough filler?
Suitability depends on what causes your under-eye appearance. Tear trough filler treats volume loss, hollowing and shadow-based dark circles. This treatment does not correct dark circles caused by pigmentation, and does not correct excess skin or fat pads, which need a different approach. We confirm suitability at your consultation, once we have assessed your under-eye area alongside the rest of your face. Tear trough filler is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
What is the difference between tear trough filler and treatment for pigmented dark circles?
Tear trough filler addresses dark circles caused by shadowing from volume loss, where the hollow under your eye casts a shadow reading as darkness. Pigmentation-based dark circles come from excess melanin or thin skin showing the blood vessels underneath, and filler will not change this. If your dark circles come from pigmentation rather than shadowing, a different approach suits you better. We assess which cause applies to you at consultation, so you get a treatment matched to what is happening in your skin.
